| JPMorgan cuts CIT estimate, stock falls
Shares of CIT Group Inc. dropped nearly 4 percent Monday after a JPMorgan Securities Inc. analyst cut his fourth-quarter estimate. Shares fell 92 cents, or 3.8 percent, to $23.60 Monday. Shares have traded between $19.29 and $61.59 in the past 12 months. Analyst George A. Sacco Jr. cut his fourth-quarter estimate to a loss of 66 cents per share from earnings of $1.25 per share. On an adjusted basis, Sacco estimates earnings of 20 cents per share. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial, on average, anticipate earnings of 66 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts' estimates do not always include special one-time charges. On Friday, CIT said a combination of losses and writedowns will reduce its earnings by $355 million, or $1.87 per share, resulting in a per-share loss of 65 to 70 cents for the quarter.
Top things dogs eat ... and shouldn't
Funny how they'll go down an esophagus but get caught in an intestine. No. 6: Chew Toys. This is unfortunate because these are marketed for dogs to chew on for either dental care or entertainment purposes. I have even seen dentrifice-purposed rope toys in dogs wrap themselves around the intestine, causing strangulation of the bowel in segments once the rope "unwinds." No. 5: Balls. Racquetballs, tennis balls, toy rubber balls, yes, I've seen them caught in the throat, esophagus, stomach and intestine in my practice life. The good news? At least they light up well on the X-rays. No. 4: Rocks. Rocks in solitary form or an amalgamation of small rocks together can really clog up the works in an intestine. Why do dogs in particular eat rocks? Do they need minerals? Are they that bored or that hungry? All I know is, they do.
The Man Who Is Creating a World Without Poverty
Since it first opened, Grameen's loans have totaled the equivalent of $6 billion, and virtually all are repaid, despite the initial poverty of the borrowers. And Grameen is no longer the only microcredit institution in Bangladesh. There are a number of others, such as the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee. Microcredit today reaches four-fifths of all poor families in the country, and we expect to reach all of them within five years. One of the key ideas behind Grameen Bank is the notion of “social collateral." Could you explain how this works, and how you came up with the idea? Is this a way of assuring that the loans are used for business rather than personal consumption, and are eventually repaid? Although the bank gives loans to poor women, there are no formal guarantees the loans will be repaid: There are no legal documents, no lawyers to assure repayment — no one can be sued.
Are we steeled for the bust?
“The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance. If he breaks that condition, servitude is at once the consequence of his crime, and the punishment of his guilt." - John Philpot Curran (1750-1817), an Irish judge. Is the street economy in Nigeria altogether insulated from the credit squeeze currently wracking the United States economy and fuelling fears of a global recession? Think…It might seem like a whole world away from here, but is it really? The US Federal Reserve had early on Tuesday slashed its benchmark interest rate by three-quarters of a percentage point. It was an apparent panic intervention to head off a dreaded recession in that country‘s economy that sent shivers across the world. The intervention was wholly out of the blue, and was pre-emptive of a scheduled rate-setting meeting of the Open Market Committee of the American central bank holding next week.
Study on decline of French in Montreal hidden, PQ says
Four years ago, I was given a student from the Philippines who only knew a few words in English: yes, no, ok. Twice a week I worked with home for an hour, and after a year and four months, this young guy knew enough English to pass his driver's license. He was the happiest man in the world. Six months ago I met him at a store, and he came over to thank me again, and said: 'Do you know how much money I make now? $22.00 an hour. And I thank you for making this possible.' This could also be done in Montreal if they really want immigrants to learn French. Posted 25/01/08 at 10:47 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .
Hoddle rules himself out of Saints running
GLENN Hoddle has ruled himself out of the running to become the new Southampton manager. The former England boss, who was in charge of Saints from January 2000 until March 2001, had been linked with a possible return to the club. However, the 50-year-old last night declared he would not be putting his name forward, due to his new academy project in Spain. "At the moment I am right in the middle of getting my academy up and running in Spain," he said. "While I am flattered to be linked to a return to Southampton, it isn't right for me now. "If it was not for the academy, I would definitely give it serious consideration. .
Crime Slave Kids Return To Families
Scotland Yard said the majority of the offences took place in Westminster, where tourists, business people and commuters fell victim to pick-pocketing gangs. Mostly coming from Romania, police say the gangs were involved in crime including pick-pocketing and cash-machine fraud. Commander Steve Allen said poor families had surrendered their children to organised crime networks in exchange for a promised financial reward. The raids, codenamed Operation Caddy, followed an eight-month intelligence operation aimed at identifying those behind certain crimes. Charles Dickens' Fagin featured in Oliver Twist and was the leader of a gang of children who made their living through theft. .
